Royal Teens News

The Royal Teens will perform July 20th 2012 at McLoone’s Supper Club in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

The Fort Lee New Jersey Film Commission has engaged the Royal Teens to perform on August 11, 2012. Fort Lee is the place where The Royal Teens first got started in 1956. This will be the first time they are returning to the place where it all began 56 years ago. For detailed information, contact Tom Myers head of the Film Commission at 201-693-2763.

The Berkely Gallery on 43rd St. between Madison Ave and 5th Avenue in Manhattan, NY will host a month long display April 7-29, featuring the art work of Tom Austin, founding member of the Royal Teens. Tom’s one man show is entitled “Stories on Canvas”. Two of the paintings that will be on display will be the Jersey Boys tribute painting called “Short Shorts Season” and “Bill Miller’s Riviera, Americas Showplace”. For information regarding the art show, contact Robert Keiber Curator of the Berkeley Gallery at 212-252-2065 or RJK@Berkeleycollege.edu.

The Riviera Painting is featured as the cover of the book written by Tom Austin and Ron Kase with the same name published by History Press. Copies are available through Amazon and Barnes and Noble or any fine book store in the US and foreign countries.

Peggy Santiglia was unable to attend the Koman event in Washington, she was replaced by Joni Relyea to read Tom Austin’s “Wildflowers” poem in Washington. The poem was read to the thousands of cancer survivors in attendance who embraced it’s inspirational message and value.

Al Kooper and Tommy Austin had a backstage reunion at the “EGG” performing arts center in Albany NY on Saturday July 25th 2009 where Al was appearing with his Funky Faculty. The two old band mates reminisced about Al’s two year on and off stint with the Royal Teens back in the late 1950′s. For those who aren’t up to date with their Rock and Roll history Al has a pedigree second to none, he has played and or recorded with Bob Dylan, the late Mike Bloomfield, Stephen Stills, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, and various members of the Beatles. Al autographed a copy of his fantastic book called “Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards”. This is one fantastic book and is recommended reading. Al said it would be great if the Royal Teens could get a shot on a PBS special because he said he would love to play with the group one more time.

Peggy Santiglia of the Angels is going to recite an inspirational poem, written by Tom Austin, at the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer foundation rally in Washington DC in June. Peggy who herself is a Breast Cancer Survivor will recite the poem at the rally where it is anticipated that 50,000 people will be in attendance. Tom was contacted by a mutual friend and asked to write the poem by another Cancer survivor Joni Relyea who herself has been an active contributor to the Komen fund for many years.

The poem is as follow:

Wildflowers
By Tom Austin

The sun is rising over the hill
The storm has passed, the air is so still
As I lie in silence and wait for the day
The sweet smell of wildflowers comes drifting my way.
I go to my window on this beautiful morn
To look at my garden so hurt by the storm
The flowers are rain soaked, with beaten down stems
But strangely enough they begin straightening again.
As I watch for a moment they begin to stand tall
Some leaning on others so they will not fall
Petal to petal, together they stand
It’s almost as if they stand hand in hand.
My garden of color once more came alive
And made it so clear that I too can survive.
